Hypnosis is a guided meditation practice that can calm a person down under most any troubling situation, and since stress triggers so many bad physical reactions in the body, using self help hypnosis for situations during which you have high anxiety will help you out a great deal.

Hypnotic tapes or CD's can be made specifically for you to teach yourself relaxation techniques in stressful situations. For example, if you do not like to fly, learning techniques that will help you recite a mantra or phrase that you have designed with self help hypnosis will get you past your anxiety and into a more relaxed frame of  mind. I use self help hypnosis to help me with my fear of heights, and it helps a great deal. Heights give me much anxiety, and by practicing my self help hypnosis techniques, I can get past most situations that otherwise would cause me a great deal of anxiety, so I do not suffer the ill effects of stress or anxiety.
